Storage & continuity
Backups on the 3-2-1 rule, with an off-site copy and a restore test every quarter — not merely saved, but restorable.

1. What I walked into
There were backups; nobody knew whether they worked. A USB disk in the machine room, and a script whose error messages nobody read.
- there was no off-site copy
- the last attempted restore was years earlier
2. What I changed or built
A backup regime on the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two different media, one of them off site. A full restore test every quarter, with a written record.
- hourly database log backups
- an immutable copy against ransomware
- a documented recovery order
3. The numbers
38 TB of data protected, with at most one hour of data lost on the critical systems. Four restore tests a year, all successful — in one of them the whole warehouse system was brought up on a standby machine.
4. The tools, and why these
Veeam for how it works with Hyper-V and MSSQL, the Synology NAS for fast local copies. The off-site copy replicates to another site, so nothing depends on a single building.
5. What it meant for the business
When a disk really did fail, the restore was routine rather than a crisis. The backups stopped being a hope and became a rehearsed procedure.
